The Legend of T. P. Shabbona

Cabin #1, Lake Shabbona

Last weekend saw the The Sapiens caravan to Lake Shabbona, IL for a close-quartered retreat aimed at writing some new tunes- something we like to call Sapiens Camp. (see our feature in The Deli Magazine for the definition of “Sapiens Camp”)

We had some great food, great weather (if you like huddling in a non-insulated cabin in mid-Nov), and some great inspriation- thanks to Dr. Shabbona (commonly referred to as simply, “Shabb”).

Originally from the Fox Valley, the once respected ivy-league professor of genetics Dr. Thaddeus Shabbona ultimately relocated back to Illinois from the East Coast in the hopes of continuing then frowned-upon methods of research in the field of genetic mutation. From his earliest days, his goal was to understand the causes and processes of mutant phenomena. This interest, and subsequent obsession is most likely attributed to Dr. Shabbona having been born with a set of inactive kangaroo legs in place of those of a human. Succumbing to the confines a wheelchair since early childhood, he shrouded his mutated extremities with a thick section of burlap. It is said his ghost haunts the lake and surrounding park still. Reports of airborne fish attacks (said to be Shabbona’s mutated minions), often leaving victims’ corpses unrecognizable even via dental records, have been widely reported- but never confirmed.

It was this tale that set the stage for a whirlwind session of creative songwriting. After stumbling through initial song ideas and lyrical structures, we decided to scrap everything we’d recorded that day, turn out the lights and start over. What happened was deluge of ideas, textures and colors. The cold stung our noses but our fingers and voices were limber and deft. We hope to get in the studio soon to record the first 2 or 3 of approximately 11 songs that were outlined in the dark.

Hopefully, this will appease Dr. Shabbona and his ghost can finally achieve peace.

We Love Craigslist

Hey Erv’rybody-

We just bought a “new” camera on Craiglist after being highly unsatisfied with the several we recently bought and promptly returned at Circuit City. BTW- the staff at CC are a scary lot.

Our new camera has been purchased with our fans in mind. We’ll be regularly posting videos of our performances, low-fi music videos, and silly random weirdness.

The one caveat being that our “new” camera is a piece of shit! A haggled $100 bought us this camera, which evidently has a well-known bug that disables all camera functions under the guise of “condensation protection.” After scouring message boards and blogs, we’ve found that the camera is easily “reset” by taking it completely apart, and disconnecting some crap. I felt like McGuyver last night as I cracked this thing in half and started pulling wires out. I guess it works, but we’ll see. If not, we know where the seller lives, and we’ll go back there and have a nice “chat.”

Jimmy’s Cafe, downtown. Bravo!

We Love Valparaiso! Can’t wait to go back! Oh, and a note to the guy who’s garage we fucked up: We’ll bring spackle and a putty knife and put the dude below to work. Whoops!

We’re still sorting through the photos and getting our stories straight from last weekend. A larger post will follow this one, and until then, know this: the man pictured below owes money and is not to be trusted. Witt saw what you did. Don’t run- Valpo will find you.

Valparaiso Hosts Enigmatic Hovering Specter of Orville Redenbacher, The Sapiens

Posted in Radio, Shows on September 25, 2008 by thesapiens

We’re all really pumped for Saturday’s show at Valparaiso University! We may need a ride back to Chicago ’cause we will most likely get our van towed/broked/set ablaze while we’re there! To learn more about our vanography and the Mystical Redenbacher Apparition, click here for an interview we did with WVUR 95.1 FM Valpo to promote this weekend’s show, opening for Relient K.

Come hang out with us and eat pizza and red vines.

Metro recap, with Monster of Montauk surprise ending

Posted in Shows on July 31, 2008 by thesapiens

Thanks to those who made it out to Metro for our Rind release show. It was our debut at Metro, and that place is just awesome. Seriously. Seeeeerioussly.

The night was going great - even after we left and went back to my apartment for the after party, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves: Pabst flowed like water, some guy fell asleep with sliced ham and antlers on his head. What more could one ask for? But then, just as party was about to peak, Monty (The monster of Montauk) showed up, uninvited and unannounced.

And he drank way too much.

He drank so much that he passed out on the beach, and we didn’t hear anything else about him until he washed up on shore in Mantauk and made the headlines yesterday. Typical Monty!

Magic Bag

We were pretty sure after we played the Lager House back in February, but now we have no doubts: The Sapiens like Detroit. A lot. Also, the surrounding neighborhoods of Detroit – Ferndale, for example, where the Magic Bag is located. We like those too.

Whenever we come around, the people we meet are nice. Cool, even. We made some new friends on Saturday night, so thanks to those who came over to say hi. Thanks also to Beggars, Freer, and Oscillating Fan Club, as well as our friends in Millions of Brazillians and Detroit Crunkstar for making Detroit a fun scene that we’re happy to call our second home.

P.S. Proof that Saturday was a good night:

Get some sleep, LaBeef

Posted in Random, Shows on July 11, 2008 by thesapiens

Tomorrow night we play Magic Bag in Ferndale, MI. This is a show we’ve really been looking forward to, not only because we’re sharing the stage with some talented and successful Detroitians (Detroitamatrons?), but also because Magic Bag is, so I gather, one of these big, historical theater type of places that every musician wants to play.

I’ve never been, so I went to their website to see if they had any pictures of the place. They don’t. They do, however, have a short list of notables who have played there, including: Los Lobos, Burning Spear, and Sleepy LaBeef.

Sleepy LaBeef. Best name ever? I had never heard of him, but apparently he’s a rather large fella, a rockabilly guitarist who’s shared bills with the likes of Elvis and Roy Orbison. Not bad. He also claims to be a major influence on The Beatles and The Boss. Now he’s in his late 60’s, playing 200 shows a year and, according to his bio, with “such energy that people a third of his age are annihilated…” Whoa!

So that’s Sleepy’s story, or at least a completely abbreviated version of it. When The Sapiens take the stage at Magic Bag tomorrow, hopefully we’ll make Sleepy LaBeef proud and annihilate at least a few people.

Gallery of Carpet Studios

We recently finished our third release, “Rind,” which is a single that will include three tracks: Rind, Good To Lose, and Flutterin’ Eyelids. It will be released at our July 25 show at The Metro in Chicago. We will be passing out FREE copies of the new disc to all fans who attend. See you there!

Here are the photos from the May ‘08 session with Brian Zieske at Gallery of Carpet. BZ rules. He’s a big dancer. We took good amount of time working with Brian and are glad to add a new friend as well as a top-notch Producer/Engineer to The Sapiens Family. Our down time in Villa Park (where the studio is located) was spent eating Doritos, playing football, and exploring the scary basement underneath Gallery of Carpet Studios. Special thanks to T.J. The Intern for helping out during the sessions.
